The Moon Also sets plot summary: Chapter 1

 PLOT SUMMARY CHAPTER ONE   The novel opens with Oby Onyia worrying about her admission to university. She is the protagonist of the novel together with her mother. Her mother consoles her and they pray about it. Oby is a 19 year old girl. She works as an Auxiliary Teacher as she awaits her admission. She has applied to university two times before and not gotten admitted. She applied the third time and is waiting. All her classmates got their admission letters but she hasn’t got has.  They live in Isiakpu. Her mother, Mrs. Onyia is a shopkeeper. She has a shop at Eke in Isiakpu. Her husband, Oby’s dad, died eight years back, we are told. Her brothers-in-law call a meeting, headed and chaired by Papa Okolla aka Pa Okolla. The reason for the meeting, he announces, is for her to get a husband among her late husband’s brothers, as is tradition. If she choose one among them, they will choose one for her. Grief Child - Chapter Three Summary.

Setting: Nimo’s home and farm Sharpening of the machetes. The day breaks and we are in Nimo’s compound. Adu, Nimo’s son, wakes up and joins his father Nimo outside – the latter is sharpening his machete (panga) getting ready to go to the farm. Nimo gives the little boy, Adu, instructions. Mahama, Nimo’s farm laborer, wakes. Adu asks to go with his father and Makama to the farm and not to go there later with his mother and sister. His father agrees. Nimo gets his rifle, machete, Adu gets his small hoe and machete, Mahama gets his tools also and the three head off to the farm – too early for birds! We learn that Nimo is an Ashanti by tribe, that he works on a farm belonging to Yeboah – a wealthy landlord who comes once in a while to inspect his farm - we learn that it is a cocoa farm. By Iryn Nakitto.  Grief Child is one of those books which that will make you cry many times. It also helps throw some light on how children face and deal with grief especially loss of loved ones. Grief Child is a novel by Darmani Lawrence. Lawrence is an award winning Ghanaian writer and teacher. He won the the Commonwealth Writers' Prize as best first book from Africa among other prizes.    The novel follows the life of Adu, a young boy who goes through many tragedies in his life. At the beginning of the novel, he gets a bad dream about a leopard chasing him and almost devouring him, people (in the dream) look on but do not help or save him from the angry leopard.  Later he loses his mother in a very terrible way.
